Visiting St John
Getting to St John
The island of St John is one of the U.S. Virgin Islands. If you are traveling from the U.S. there is no passport required, though you do need to clear customs just as you do in most island nations. St John is the closest U.S. Virgin Island to the British Virgin Islands, making it a common stopping point for travelers exploring more of the Caribbean. You can easily take a boat charter, water taxi, or ferry to adventure in the British Virgin Islands (but yes, a passport is required for entry and exit from there).
There is no airport on St John! Most guests fly into St Thomas (STT) and taxi to either Crown Bay Marina (5 minute ride) or Red Hook Ferry Terminal (30 minute ride) to take a public ferry or private water taxi to St John. The quick trip from St Thomas to St John is usually 15-30 minutes long depending on which marina you leave from. Some guests may be arriving or passing through via a private yacht as the Virgin Islands are some of the best boating waters in the Caribbean.
Things to Do
-
Snorkeling & Diving
The waters of St John are full of vibrant life to see firsthand underwater. Grab a snorkel and mask and see what creatures you encounter. Do not forget to try the Underwater Snorkel Trail near Cinnamon Bay.
-
Hiking
St John is two-thirds National Park and that includes well-marked hiking trails. You can hike from shore to mountaintop or all around. Check out the St John National Park website for more information. And yes... AllTrails works here too!
-
Boating
There is so much to see and do beyond the shoreline. Rent a small boat from Wharfside Watersports and spend a day circumnavigating the island. Or do a day charter with one of the many charter companies on island - we recommend a sailboat and let the winds take you on your journey.
-
Horseback Riding
Check out Carolina Corral and see the island from another perspective - on horseback! Horse (and donkeys) are fond creatures on the island and make for a unique way of seeing the island.
